About this specimen
Hunan, dolomite with pyrite at 3.2 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Dolomite crystals in white with the faintest pink cast are grouped into a rosette, their curved faces bright, with dark pyrite grains caught between the plates.
Dolomite forms curved, saddle-shaped rhombs with a pearly lustre and is the usual companion of calcite and fluorite in Chinese carbonate deposits.
Pyrite is the most collected metallic mineral, and the best pieces combine sharp form with a lustre that has not dulled; store it dry to keep it that way.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
The piece is miniature in size, 3.2 × 2.9 × 2.8 cm (1.26 × 1.14 × 1.10 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
