About this specimen
Hunan, dolomite with fluorite at 8 cm; a cabinet plate. Dolomite covers the whole plate in white platy rosettes, the curved crystals overlapping each other so the surface reads as a bed of small folded flowers.
Dolomite's slightly curved rhombohedral faces separate it at a glance from calcite.
Fluorite is the classic collector's halide: calcium fluoride that grows as cubes, octahedra and stepped combinations, often with colour zoning that shows best in daylight.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
Dimensions place it in the cabinet range, 8 × 5.9 × 2.8 cm (3.15 × 2.32 × 1.10 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
