这件埃龙戈标本几乎通体深暗：近黑色的板状晶体密密丛生，散开成莲座状，其间闪着灰色的金属光点。 而标本存在的理由，正从这片密丛顶端升起——一颗淡色的柱状海蓝宝石，玻璃质，尖端清透如冰，自四周的黑色晶片中独立而出。
海蓝宝石是绿柱石的蓝色变种，Be3Al2Si6O18，六方晶系，摩氏硬度 7.5 至 8——正因够硬，这颗小晶体才能在周围较软的矿物崩落之际，保住自己的棱线与晶端。 埃龙戈的晶洞受人搜藏，看中的正是这种对比：一颗锐利的浅色绿柱石，落在深色板状基底之上，目光无需引导便会落在晶体上。
