About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with cassiterite, feldspar and mica at 8.1 cm and 271 g; a cabinet piece. A cluster of yellow-green aquamarine crystals over white feldspar and mica with black cassiterite grains at the base, the beryl glassy.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Look for the elbow twins and mirror-like lustre that make cassiterite so distinctive; its density is nearly seven times that of water. Feldspar is the matrix of choice in Chinese pegmatite specimens: blocky cream to pale-orange crystals that set off the garnet, quartz and tourmaline growing on them.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

Dimensions place it in the cabinet range, 8.1 × 5.1 × 6.4 cm (3.19 × 2.01 × 2.52 in) and 271 g (9.6 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
