About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with mica and fluorite at 3.8 cm and 27 g; a miniature. A clear aquamarine crystal with an orange iron stain, mica and a small fluorite at its top, the faces glassy with a rainbow flash.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece. Fluorite crystallises in the cubic system and is prized for its saturated colour, glassy lustre and the way zoned phantoms appear when the crystals are back-lit.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

By size it is miniature, 3.8 × 1.7 × 3.2 cm (1.50 × 0.67 × 1.26 in) and 27 g (1.0 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
