About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with mica and feldspar at 10.3 cm and 252 g; a cabinet plate. A broad plate of pale silvery mica rosettes covering the whole face, with a small aquamarine crystal near the top edge and white feldspar between.

Glassy hexagonal prisms and a sea-blue tone define the aquamarine variety.

Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece. Feldspar is the matrix of choice in Chinese pegmatite specimens: blocky cream to pale-orange crystals that set off the garnet, quartz and tourmaline growing on them.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

Dimensions place it in the cabinet range, 7.5 × 10.3 × 3 cm (2.95 × 4.06 × 1.18 in) and 252 g (8.9 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
