About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with mica and feldspar at 5.6 cm and 59 g; a small cabinet piece. A cluster of pale, glassy aquamarine crystals over sugary white feldspar with pale mica between, the beryl translucent.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece. Feldspar is the matrix of choice in Chinese pegmatite specimens: blocky cream to pale-orange crystals that set off the garnet, quartz and tourmaline growing on them.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

By size it is small cabinet, 5.2 × 5.6 × 2 cm (2.05 × 2.20 × 0.79 in) and 59 g (2.1 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.
