橄榄金色的晶片在此反复交错，像仓促搭起的格栅：板状的重晶石晶体，每一片都是扁平的金色薄板，边缘泛着亮光，以各种角度层层堆叠，最终整丛读作一整块互相咬合的结构。 穿行其间的是色泽更淡、近乎无色而带暖调红晕的晶片，宽阔的晶面迎光闪动，金色的那些则像自内部发亮。
重晶石是 BaSO4——斜方晶系，摩氏硬度仅 3 至 3.5，以其体积而言重得出人意料。 第一次拿起时，重量就是最明显的线索：一丛宽不过 6.6 cm 的晶簇，却有 145 g。 它的软也值得敬重，薄薄的晶片边缘，比那层玻璃般的光泽看起来更容易崩缺。
