天蓝色的异极矿在此长成一丛丛紧密的丘状晶簇，每一丛都是针晶肩并肩挤成的半球。 颜色在丘与丘之间的凹处积得最深——一种柔和而均匀的松石蓝——到了针尖则褪成霜白，使整层晶壳看起来像从内部发光。 其下深褐色的基底裂出赭黄色的条纹，那是原生锌矿风化留下的痕迹。
异极矿是一种锌的矽酸盐，Zn4Si2O7(OH)2·H2O，形成于锌矿床氧化带的上部；那抹蓝一般归因于结构中夹带的微量铜，而云南正是中国产出它的矿地。 摩氏硬度 4.5 至 5，晶壳结实到可用软毛刷除尘，但那些针尖十分脆弱——切勿用布在上面拖拉。
