知更鸟蛋蓝的异极矿在此长成短短的珊瑚状分枝，每一枝都朝着钝圆、略偏绿的顶端渐粗，自一层覆盖褐色铁染岩板上表面的白色细针晶垫上升起。 一臂之遥看去，蓝色像是一片单一的色晕；凑近则分解为一根根分枝的柱体。
异极矿是一种含水锌矽酸盐，Zn4Si2O7(OH)2·H2O，形成于锌矿体之上的氧化帽中，那里循环的水会改造闪锌矿。 无色与白色是寻常的结果；像这样的中国标本所带的蓝调，一般认为来自微量的铜。 莫氏硬度 4.5 至 5，比看起来结实，不过纤细的针晶容易折断，绝不可刷拭。
