两颗丁香紫的尖晶自一块低矮的灰绿色岩板升起，第三颗晶体则在旁向后倚着岩石。 三颗的底部都近乎无色，愈往尖端愈聚起紫意；它们的晶面明亮、锥面锐利，脚边挤着较小的晶体，寄主岩则沿下缘断成一条深色的细粒带。
维拉克鲁兹的紫水晶生在蚀变火山岩的孔洞里，因此晶体纤细、常能独立站立，也比多数人一听这名字就想到的巴西晶洞材料淡得多。 颜色来自二氧化矽晶格（SiO2）中的微量铁，经天然辐照改变而成；同样的机制也意味着长时间曝晒会使它褪色——请让这样的标本远离明亮的窗口。
