黃鐵礦的化學式為 FeS2，莫氏硬度 6 至 6.5，硬到能與鋼擊出火花——這正是它名稱的由來，源自希臘文的「火」。條紋是天然生長的誠實簽名：方向會從一個晶面換到下一個晶面，任何拋光或處理都無法複製。石英是硫化物脈中的常見同伴，在此提供了清澈的對比。此標本登記的產地為西班牙。
