這裡沒有一顆螢石是平面的。每一顆淡冰藍色晶體都由越疊越小的立方體堆成，輪廓因而圓潤而呈階梯狀，散落在白色粒狀石英結殼之上。最大的一顆位於右緣，約一公分見方，藍色最濃處的核心深藏著一抹紫色。
螢石為 CaF2，屬等軸晶系，這種階梯狀、近乎球形的晶習來自立方體晶面以錯位方式層層堆疊，而非平整地向外鋪展：那是生長快速而養分略顯不足的標誌。莫氏硬度 4，以陳列礦物而言偏軟，又具四個方向的完全解理，因此絕不可與較硬的標本一同鬆散地放在口袋裡運送。福建螢石的螢光表現並不穩定——有些在長波紫外光下有反應，有些則沒有——所以任何發光都應視為額外的驚喜，而不是承諾。
