About this specimen

Shangbao Mine, Hunan, purple-blue fluorite with calcite at 130 g; a small cabinet piece for the UV collector.

Fluorite is the classic collector's halide: calcium fluoride that grows as cubes, octahedra and stepped combinations, often with colour zoning that shows best in daylight.

Calcite is the most shape-shifting of common minerals: over 800 crystal forms have been described, and Chinese localities produce many of the best.

Shangbao Mine in Leiyang, Hunan, is a pyrite-fluorite locality known for mirror-faced pyrite, phantom fluorite and calcite.

By size it is small cabinet, 6.7 × 5.1 × 3.8 cm (2.64 × 2.01 × 1.50 in) and 130 g (4.6 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
