關於此標本
天藍色的異極礦在此長成一叢叢緊密的丘狀晶簇，每一叢都是針晶肩並肩擠成的半球。顏色在丘與丘之間的凹處積得最深——一種柔和而均勻的松石藍——到了針尖則褪成霜白，使整層晶殼看起來像從內部發光。其下深褐色的基底裂出赭黃色的條紋，那是原生鋅礦風化留下的痕跡。
異極礦是一種鋅的矽酸鹽，Zn4Si2O7(OH)2·H2O，形成於鋅礦床氧化帶的上部；那抹藍一般歸因於結構中夾帶的微量銅，而雲南正是中國產出它的礦地。摩氏硬度 4.5 至 5，晶殼結實到可用軟毛刷除塵，但那些針尖十分脆弱——切勿用布在上面拖拉。
