一團緊實糾結的近黑色錫石晶體盤踞在這件四川小標本的頂部，晶面光潔如鏡，映出銳利的白色高光；而較薄的稜邊透出紅棕色的光暈，那正是洩露這種礦物身分之處。頂部叢生著銳利且彼此貫穿的晶端，底部則有一層銀白色的片狀晶體沿邊展開，把整組晶體托離基座。
錫石是二氧化錫，SnO2，也是世界上最主要的錫礦石。它結晶於四方晶系，常呈短柱狀與陡峭的雙錐，並經常結合成膝狀雙晶——正是此處糾結在一起的那些晶形，而絕非八面體。莫氏硬度 6–7，質地堅硬，以其體積而言重量明顯偏高；金剛光澤至半金屬光澤，遠比它近乎不透明的顏色所暗示的更為明亮。
