錫石最好的樣子，看起來不像錫的礦石，倒像雕琢過的黑色玻璃，而這枚雪寶頂晶體正是如此：一件漆黑、鏡面般明亮的雙晶標本，隨著轉動不斷閃光。在強光下，薄薄的稜邊處黑色讓位給深紅褐色的半透明——正是這抹隱藏的光，把寶石級的雪寶頂錫石與尋常的黑料區分開來。
晶體自一層乳白色的晶簇石英床上升起，其間穿織著銀色的白雲母薄片，這是四川平武上方阿爾卑斯型裂隙脈的經典粉彩母岩。單憑這份對比就完成了陳列的工作：上為黑色鏡面，下是閃亮的白。
錫石（SnO2）相對於體積的密度高得驚人——這件標本僅 7.1 × 5.6 × 7.6 cm 卻重達 425 g，上手的分量感也是這個礦種的樂趣之一。曾產出此類雙晶的雪寶頂晶洞已經沉寂，潔淨的樣本如今多半在藏家之間流轉，而不是從地底出來。
