薄如指甲的方解石刃晶在整個正面交疊成朵朵花飾，在彼此擁擠之處白中透著最淡的暖粉。每一朵花都由自同一點向外扇開的扁平板狀晶體構成，這些扇形又層層堆疊成低矮的稜脊，因此表面盡是稜邊與細小的陰影。在頂端方解石變薄之處，一枚灰色的玻璃質晶核透了出來。
這種板狀、花朵般的晶體習性，來自方解石快速而扁平地生長，而非緩慢地長成菱面體——與產出冰洲石的是同一個礦種，只是換了一件截然不同的外衣。CaCO3，莫氏硬度 3，具三組完全解理：此處最脆弱的部位就是刃晶的邊緣，而柔軟的乾刷是這件標本唯一該接觸的清潔工具。
