雕刻者順著石頭的性子走：這顆骷髏取自乳白色螢石，石中穿插著柔和的苔綠色域，而綠色正好落在眉骨與一側眼窩，發揮了最大的效果。整體為霧面處理，霜狀的表面把光線散開而不是反射出去，顱頂與一側顳部則保留為粗糙的螢石解理面——平坦而方正的塊面，自雕出的面容一階階退開。
螢石是氟化鈣 CaF2，等軸晶系，莫氏硬度 4，具四個方向的完全八面體解理。這種解理讓未雕琢的部位呈現階梯狀、磚砌般的外觀，也正是雕刻螢石需要柔軟落腳處的原因：沿著解理面的一記硬碰，會讓石頭乾脆地裂開。白至綠的色帶記錄了原始晶體仍在生長時流體化學的變化。
骷髏尺寸 8.6 × 5.1 × 7.1 cm，以自身的下顎平穩地平放站立，因此不需要腳架。照片中的一切就是這顆骷髏本身。
