About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, fluorite with scheelite and mica at 9.6 cm and 265 g; a cabinet piece, priced with the damage disclosed. A tall block of golden-brown mica with pale, translucent fluorite crystals set into its face and a honey scheelite crystal beside them; the supplier notes one fluorite face is damaged.

Fluorite crystallises in the cubic system and is prized for its saturated colour, glassy lustre and the way zoned phantoms appear when the crystals are back-lit.

Scheelite is calcium tungstate, forming orange to honey-coloured bipyramids with a greasy lustre and a bright blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV. Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.

The Xuebaoding veins of Pingwu County, Sichuan, produced the orange scheelite and muscovite-aquamarine combinations that put Chinese minerals on the map.

Dimensions place it in the cabinet range, 6.3 × 4.6 × 9.6 cm (2.48 × 1.81 × 3.78 in) and 265 g (9.3 oz). Disclosed condition: a damaged fluorite face. The price reflects it and the photographs show the affected area. The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
