About this specimen

White calcite blades lie across the crown of this Yaogangxian piece like fallen timber, flat lath-shaped crystals overlapping at every angle, a few stained tan where iron has reached them. Beneath the blades the fluorite is a soft, dusty lilac with a frosted matte skin—no glassy cube faces here, but a granular surface that scatters the light and gives the colour a chalky, almost powdery quality.

Calcite over fluorite is a familiar Yaogangxian pairing, and the sequence is legible on the specimen itself: the fluorite formed first, the calcite settled across it afterwards. Calcite (CaCO3) cleaves in three directions and rates only Mohs 3, which makes those laths the vulnerable part of the piece—a knock the fluorite would ignore will snap one clean off. Keep it away from anything acidic, household cleaners included.

A small piece: 4.8 × 3.8 × 2.3 cm, 60 g, presented on the clear acrylic block visible in the photographs, which tilts the calcite-covered face toward the viewer. Specimen and block both ship as shown here.
