About this specimen
Bands of frost-white cut diagonally across a body of pale seafoam green, and the crown above them cools to lilac-grey — three colours in one head, every one of them native to the block rather than added to it. The carving is deliberately spare: rounded cranium, deep orbits, a squared row of teeth cut with a fine wheel, and cleavage terraces left standing along the brow where the fluorite parted along its own planes.
Fluorite splits on four octahedral directions, and banded material such as this splits most willingly along the pale seams. Anyone working a piece like it has to read the banding before the wheel touches the stone, which is also why the reverse has been left alone entirely, keeping the raw quartz-lined pocket the block came out of.
8.9 × 6.4 × 8.6 cm and 495 g. What the camera recorded here, black-glass reflection and all, is the skull that ships.
