About this specimen

Slate-blue fluorite cubes step across the right-hand third of this long Yaogangxian plate. Their edges are not cut clean: each face is a stack of slightly offset growth ledges, and where two cubes meet the terraces run into one another like tidelines. The largest crystals hold a faint internal haze; smaller ones toward the middle are paler, close to colourless. Olive-cream dolomite druse blankets the rest, with reddish-brown tabular blades across the join.

Yaogangxian in Hunan is a tungsten mine that has long paid its way twice over in specimens, and its blues are scarcer than its greens and purples. Fluorite is CaF2, its colour owed to lattice defects and trace substitutions rather than any pigment element. Mohs 4, cleaving perfectly in four directions: a knock on an exposed corner parts a clean flake, so lift by the matrix, never by a crystal.

The plate runs 14.0 × 5.8 × 4.3 cm and weighs 560 g. It is shown unmounted, resting on an open hand; these frames record this plate alone, not a representative sample.
