About this specimen

A narrow ridge of white drusy quartz carries a run of honey-yellow fluorite cubes, thickest through the upper half and thinning as the matrix tapers. The best crystals are cleanly transparent, gold at the core and bevelled at the corners where extra faces have modified the cube; smaller neighbours fade to straw, and a few are colourless altogether. Against the white quartz the yellow looks warmer than it would on any darker host.

Yellow is the least common of the ordinary Chinese fluorite colours, well behind purple and green, and it comes from colour centres in the CaF2 structure rather than from an added element you could point to. At Mohs 4 the fluorite is markedly softer than the quartz it sits on, so the matrix will outlast the crystals under careless handling — and it is worth keeping the piece out of long spells of direct sunlight.

The specimen is 4.1 × 1.8 × 4.1 cm and weighs 30 g, shown between finger and thumb with putty at the base rather than on a stand. Photographs were taken of this piece alone.

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
