About this specimen

Violet gathers along the outer edges of this single Yaogangxian fluorite and fades inward: a soft lilac core, a broad band of dark plum around it, then a frosted white skin where the last growth turned cloudy. The cube faces step rather than lie flat, and a scrap of dark, iron-stained matrix still grips the lower left edge.

Zoning like this is a record of changing water chemistry. Fluorite takes its purple from defects in the lattice rather than from a pigment, so every pulse of growth locks in a slightly different shade and the boundaries stay razor-sharp. The mineral is calcium fluoride, CaF2, Mohs 4, with perfect cleavage in four octahedral directions; a knock on a corner will pop a clean triangular flake rather than chip, so lift the piece by its base.

Compact at 3.3 × 3.0 × 2.3 cm and 26 g, it arrives on the pale stone plinth seen here, which holds the crystal at a slight tilt toward the viewer. What is in the photographs is what will ship.
