關於此標本
棲在母岩邊緣、向外懸挑出去的，是這件浙江標本上的方解石：一顆塊狀單晶，呈淡淡的稻黃色——半透明，晶面寬闊，平坦的面上飄著淺淡的生長紋，帶著柔和的玻璃光澤，而非鏡面般的反射。底下的寄主岩塊呈淺灰白色，雜著褐黃色的斑塊，上緣一帶則點綴著細小的無色晶殼晶體。
方解石的生長形態之多，幾乎勝過任何其他礦物——菱面體、複三方偏三角面體、板狀、釘頭狀——而一顆大晶體仍安坐在自己的母岩上，正是收藏者會留下來的那一種。化學式很平常，就是 CaCO3；由此而來的後果卻不平常。摩氏硬度 3，鋼針可在其上留下劃痕，沿三個解理方向乾淨裂開，遇家用酸液會起泡，因此整套清潔程序就只有一支乾刷。
標本尺寸 10.2 × 10.2 × 5.3 cm，重 420 g，隨附圖中所見的細長金屬支架與淺色木質底座——每一個畫面都拍自這一件標本。
