數百枚細小的石英晶體在此自共同的核心向外輻射，堆疊得如此緊密，使整團渾圓成球，四面八方都豎著晶尖。每一個晶端都尖銳而具玻璃光澤；晶尖之間，內部透出較清冷的灰，因此標本邊緣看來淺白帶霜，往中央則漸入陰影。它直立安置在一塊透明壓克力方塊上。
這類集合體始於開放空腔中的單一成核點：晶體向外生長、彼此爭奪空間，最終隨著晶洞給予的餘裕多寡，展開成半球或完整的球體。石英（SiO2）摩氏硬度 7 且化學性質頑強，因此材質本身相當耐久——但單根晶尖細如針，若標本在堅硬檯面上滾動便會折斷。請托著底座拿取。
