關於此標本
鮭粉色的菱面體，大多不超過三、四毫米，散落在深灰色的母岩上，母岩處處覆著一層薄薄的白色結殼。正是這種散布讓標本耐看：溫暖的粉紅襯著近乎全黑的底色，而單顆晶體銳利得足以在放大鏡下顯出它們傾斜的菱面體晶面。
菱錳礦是碳酸錳，化學式為 MnCO3，屬三方晶系，顏色隨錳含量而變化——此處柔和的鮭粉色調是中國產地的特徵，而非某些其他產地那種濃郁的覆盆子紅。它是一種難以照顧的礦物：莫氏硬度 3.5 至 4，三個方向具完全解理，且完全無法承受酸液或超音波清洗。請乾燥存放，並從底部給予支撐。
一件 4.3 × 2.0 × 1.0 cm、20 g 的迷你標本，倚放在照片中所見的透明壓克力底座上。那些影像拍攝的就是這一小片標本，別無其他。
