Über diese Stufe
Tiefschwarze Kassiterit-Blätter spreizen sich nach außen zu einem flachen Fächer, jede Fläche mit feinen vertikalen Riefen liniert, die als harte Silberlinien aufleuchten, sobald sich das Licht bewegt. Die beiden größten Kristalle treffen nahe dem oberen Ende entlang eines scharfen Kontakts aufeinander und geben der Gruppe ihr gestuftes, keilförmig geschnittenes Profil. Darunter nimmt ein kleiner wasserklarer Quarzkristall das Gewicht auf, seine Spitze wie eine Strebe unter den Fächer geschoben.
Kassiterit (SnO2) ist das wichtigste Zinnerz: tetragonal, Mohshärte 6 bis 7 und so dicht, dass ein Stück dieser Größe schwerer in der Hand liegt, als es aussieht. Yaogangxian in Chenzhou, Hunan, ist ein Wolfram-Zinn-Gangsystem, weshalb sein Kassiterit auf Quarz aufsitzt, statt im Erz eingeschlossen zu sein. Die Riefen sind Wachstumslinien parallel zur Prismenachse – keine Beschädigung, und der Grund, warum das Mineral aus dem einen Winkel mattschwarz und aus dem nächsten spiegelhell wirkt.
Das Stück misst 3,0 × 1,8 × 6,1 cm und wiegt 54 g, mit Haftknete auf einem klaren Acrylblock gesetzt. Fotografiert wurde ausschließlich dieses Exemplar, Präsentationsblock inbegriffen.
