Sobre este espécimen
La hemimorfita, de un azul huevo de petirrojo, crece aquí en cortas ramas coralinas, cada una engrosándose hacia una punta roma y algo más verdosa, que se alzan desde un manto blanco de finos cristales aciculares que cubre la superficie superior de una losa parda teñida de hierro. A un brazo de distancia el azul se lee como un solo baño de color; de cerca se resuelve en tallos ramificados independientes.
La hemimorfita es un silicato de zinc hidratado, Zn4Si2O7(OH)2·H2O, formado en la cubierta oxidada que corona la mena de zinc, donde el agua circulante retrabaja la esfalerita. Lo corriente es que resulte incolora o blanca; el matiz azul de los ejemplares chinos como este suele atribuirse a trazas de cobre. Una dureza de 4,5 a 5 la hace más resistente de lo que parece, aunque las agujas esbeltas se parten con facilidad y nunca deben cepillarse.
La pieza mide 4,6 × 4,1 × 2,5 cm y pesa 45 g; se muestra sobre un bloque de acrílico transparente y asentada sobre una almohadilla de masilla verde. Lo que ve en las fotografías es la pieza que se envía.
