Sobre este espécimen
Miles de láminas de hematita finas como cabellos se abren en abanico desde un único origen en esta pequeña pieza de Bayan Obo, y el brillo se desliza sobre ellas al girarla: plateado desde un ángulo, negro absoluto desde el siguiente. La cúpula que forman no llega a 4 cm de altura y, aun así, la superficie se comporta como acero cepillado más que como un mineral, y cada lámina capta la luz una fracción de segundo después que su vecina.
La hematita es óxido de hierro, Fe2O3, y la variedad especular crece en estas finas placas micáceas en lugar del habitual hábito masivo y mate. Por metálica que parezca, si la arrastra sobre porcelana sin esmaltar la raya sale de color pardo rojizo: la prueba más antigua y fiable del equipo de campo. Bayan Obo, en Mongolia Interior, es conocido sobre todo como distrito de hierro y tierras raras, y su especularita presenta este acabado satinado y fibroso tan particular.
4,3 × 3,0 × 3,8 cm y 65 g, con un reborde de pequeños cristales incoloros y polvo ocre alrededor de la base, allí donde se separó de la pared de la cavidad. Se sostiene sobre el pequeño bloque expositor que se ve en las imágenes, todas ellas dedicadas a este único espécimen.
