Yunxiao, Fujian, smoky quartz-feldspar-mica-pyrite at 20 g; a miniature with four species.
Smoky quartz owes its brown-to-black tone to natural irradiation of trace aluminium in the lattice, and the best pieces keep transparency through the colour.
Feldspar forms the blocky, pale crystals that act as a stage for the more colourful minerals in a pegmatite pocket. Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece.
The pegmatites of Yunxiao County, Fujian, are the source of the orange spessartine-smoky quartz combinations that reached the market after 2010.
The piece is miniature in size, 3.7 × 2.7 × 2.6 cm (1.46 × 1.06 × 1.02 in) and 20 g (0.7 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
