この標本について
オリーブとモスグリーンがこの小さな葡萄石の球の表面を奪い合い、濃い緑は、輪を描いては鉤の手に折れる淡いクリーム色の脈に断ち切られています。肌はガラス質ではなくマットで細かな粒状。肩の一か所には、周囲の肌よりわずかに沈んだ濃い黄緑の結晶のポケットが開いています。
葡萄石はカルシウムとアルミニウムの珪酸塩で、独立した単結晶として育つことはほとんどありません。かわりにブドウ状の皮殻や、密に放射する集合をつくります。手に収まる丸い形で出回るものが多いのはそのためです。モース硬度6から6.5と丈夫で気兼ねなく手に取れ、やや蝋のような光沢は、光を跳ね返すのではなくやわらかく受け止めます。
球の差し渡しは 3.3 cm、重量は 50 g。撮影では透明アクリル台の上に白いパテで支えています。上の写真はいずれも、この球そのものを写したものです。
