この標本について
ベラクルスのアメシストには、ほかの産地には真似のできない姿があります。細く長いガラス質の柱が、先端に近づいたところでだけ菫色を濃くするのです。メキシコ・ベラクルス州ピエドラ・パラダ産のこの群晶はそれを扇いっぱいに束ね、最も背の高い一本は鮮烈な紫の冠をいただいて、きらめく灰色の母岩から立ち上がります。その下では、より淡い藤色の結晶が低い角度で交差しています。
この産地の結晶は壊れやすいことで知られ、採掘と輸送を経て錐面を保ったまま残る群晶は例外的です。14.5 × 8.1 × 6.1 cm、248 g という本品は、ベラクルス産としては堂々たる大きさといえます。
