这种玫瑰花状的形态，直接源自石膏（CaSO4·2H2O）结晶的环境：在潮湿的沙中，每一片生长中的晶片都必须穿过并绕过砂粒，最终通体含砂而非清澈透明。 正是这些被困住的砂，使沙漠玫瑰看来雾面无光，而洁净的石膏晶体则呈玻璃光泽。 石膏摩氏硬度仅 2——指甲即可留下刻痕——且微溶于水，因此这是一件只能除尘、绝不可水洗或浸泡的标本。
