標本中央一處藍銅礦晶洞閃閃發亮，藍得極為飽和，隨著光線移動在電光藍與海軍藍之間擺盪；數以千計的微小錐面襯滿整個空腔，那份閃爍正是它們同時反光的結果。草綠色的孔雀石在洞緣結成薄殼與小顆葡萄狀團塊，母岩則是深沉的鐵染褐色，把藍色向前推了出來。
這兩種礦物在化學上只差一步。藍銅礦的化學式為 Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2，是兩者中較不穩定的一方，會緩慢吸水轉變為孔雀石，這也是為什麼同一件標本上綠色常常鑲在藍色邊上。請避免長時間直曬與乾熱環境以減緩這項變化，並且絕不可水洗——像這樣的晶簇，最多只能承受一支柔軟的乾毛刷。
