知更鳥蛋藍，通體帶著霜面。這件雲南藍銅礦是一條長而微拱的微晶質藍色晶殼——淡如淺水，而非墨色——被乳白色的斑塊打斷，上緣鑲著一圈細白晶殼，隨標本轉動而閃爍。這裡沒有可以指認的單顆晶體：全部的看頭都在這層結殼的表面，以及藍色在其上時薄時厚的流轉。
藍銅礦是一種銅的碳酸鹽，Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2，形成於銅礦床氧化帶的上部，摩氏硬度僅 3.5 至 4，質地偏軟。銅的碳酸鹽在穩定而遮蔭的環境中保存得最好，因此請給它一個避開長時間直射陽光、也遠離潮濕的位置。
