細密的平行條紋梳理過這顆方解石單晶的每一個晶面，把光線拆解成柔和的銀色線條，隨著標本轉動而流移。晶體呈煙灰白色、半透明，形態厚實而非尖銳，晶面相接處是俐落的斜切稜。它坐落在一塊深色鐵染母岩上，母岩上散布著無色的小方解石——那是這一大團玻璃質晶體底下粗糙的礦化基底。
福建這一路的方解石正是為了這種組合而被收藏：一顆碩大、自成一體的晶體，其帶紋的晶面記錄下建構它的每一次生長脈動。方解石（CaCO3）屬三方晶系，摩氏硬度僅 3，而其完全的菱面體解理意味著稜角受碰時可能開出一道明亮的階梯狀斷口。請以軟毛刷除塵，並讓它遠離酸——連家用白醋都會蝕刻那些晶面。
