About this specimen
Fujian calcite with fluorite at 14.7 cm; a display piece for the UV collector. A large block of calcite crystals over fluorite, photographed by the supplier under UV where the calcite glows magenta-pink and the fluorite deep blue.
Calcium carbonate in its rhombohedral form, calcite is soft (Mohs 3) and takes a bright vitreous to pearly lustre on fresh faces.
Fluorite crystallises in the cubic system and is prized for its saturated colour, glassy lustre and the way zoned phantoms appear when the crystals are back-lit.
Fujian's fluorite-quartz veins have supplied collectors for two decades; the province is the source of most of the green and purple Chinese fluorite on the market.
Dimensions place it in the large cabinet range, 14.7 × 12.6 × 9 cm (5.79 × 4.96 × 3.54 in) and 1636 g (57.7 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
