一顆水清透明的方解石晶體騎在這件大冶標本的頂端，階梯狀的晶面接住光線，下方的黃鐵礦則在葉片般的表面上流過金色、橄欖色與孔雀藍。右肩處還藏著第二顆小得多的方解石。整件標本直立而起，以它的底面積而言相當高挑，安放在透明壓克力座上。
湖北大冶是老牌的銅鐵礦區，當地的硫化物晶洞常以晚期的碳酸鹽收尾——這裡凍結的正是這樣的順序：金屬先成，方解石最後，坐在最上面。黃鐵礦成分為 FeS2，新鮮時呈黃銅色；這件標本表面的彩色薄膜來自表層氧化，一擦就失去光彩，所以請握住座台，別去碰金屬。
標本尺寸緊湊，3.8 × 2.5 × 2.3 cm、20 g，以白色黏土固定在圖中的壓克力底座上。畫面中的一切都屬於這件商品：標本，以及它下方的座台。
