天藍色的異極礦覆蓋這件雲南楔形標本的上三分之一，並在深色岩石開始處戛然而止。底下的被覆呈葡萄狀，藍得飽和；其上則坐著數十簇放射狀晶扇，每一簇都是一叢細針的迸射，自根部的藍漸淡到尖端近乎純白。色界線以下的母岩是一塊逐漸收窄的褐黑色楔體，帶著鐵染而粗糙。
異極礦是一種鋅矽酸鹽，Zn4Si2O7(OH)2·H2O，形成於鋅礦床氧化帶的上部——這正是它為何會像這樣坐落在風化的富鐵岩石之上，而自同一帶捕獲的微量銅，則是它染上藍色的原因。莫氏硬度 4.5 至 5，針狀晶扇是脆弱之處：切勿刷拭，切勿浸泡，取放時請握住母岩楔體。
