板狀晶體如一層厚密的絨毛，覆滿這塊岩板的整個展示面：麥稈黃中透著橄欖色調，半透明，每一枚都是僅數毫米長的扁楔形，肩並肩地擠在一起，在燈下整片表面都豎起細芒。沿著底緣，晶殼收成一道白色細縫，再轉為炭黑色的寄主岩，這道色調的切口把黃色襯得格外分明。
釩鉛礦，Pb5(VO4)3Cl，最為人熟知的是消防車般的正紅色，但這個礦種也會長成淡麥稈色與橄欖色調，而這塊岩板整體都落在該色域的淺色一端。它是氧化帶中的釩酸鉛礦物，莫氏硬度 2.5–3——軟到指甲就能劃出痕跡，也就意味著絕不可有布巾從那些晶尖上拖過。
