關於此標本
一枚不比李子大的淡藍綠色圓丘，表面如揉皺的天鵝絨：這件雲南霰石由極細的針狀晶體構成，密織到整層結殼看來如同麂皮，直到光線落上，整個表面才開始閃爍。藍色自頂部到邊緣勻淨如一，只有在結殼脫離母岩的斷口處才轉為白色。
霰石與方解石共用同一化學式 CaCO3，差別只在原子的堆疊方式——霰石屬斜方晶系，傾向纖維狀、針狀的生長；方解石屬三方晶系，晶形方正。正是這種結構上的偏好造就了此處的絨面。莫氏硬度 3.5 至 4，針尖脆弱：以吹氣或軟毛刷除塵即可，切勿沖水。
結殼寬 4.6 cm，高 4.1 cm，厚 2.5 cm，重 80 g，如圖陳列於小型透明壓克力座上。此處每一張照片，都只拍攝這一件標本。
