關於此標本
黃銅金色的黃鐵礦擠滿這塊西班牙小板的表面，晶體一顆挨著一顆，幾乎不留空隙。細密的平行條紋橫掃每一個晶面，在光線下聚成一道道窄光帶。金色變薄之處，清澈如水的石英晶體楔在縫隙之間，形態短粗而非柱狀，一側邊緣還保留著一圈赭色岩石。
那些條紋值得用放大鏡細看。黃鐵礦 FeS2 在生長時會在立方體晶面與五角十二面體晶面之間交替，兩種晶形以細小的階梯互相穿插，記錄下每一次轉換。莫氏硬度 6 至 6.5，這種礦物雖硬卻脆，金屬光澤遇到潮濕的手指便會轉暗，因此乾燥的展示櫃與乾燥的雙手，能讓這片金色亮上數十年。
