少有礦物能像透視石這樣擁有綠色——不是綠柱石那種清冷的淡綠，而是飽和的瓶身祖母綠，在晶體彼此堆疊之處近乎轉黑。一道參差的斜向晶帶橫越這件標本，由短粗的柱狀晶體組成，晶面玻璃光澤強到能拋出銳利的白色高光，襯在多孔的鮭褐色圍岩上，對比再強烈不過。
綠色來自銅。透視石是含水的銅矽酸鹽，CuSiO3·H2O，形成於銅礦床氧化帶的上部，循環的地下水在那裡把礦石改造成遠比原先漂亮的東西。莫氏硬度 5 聽來耐用，但三個方向的完全解理使它性脆：晶體不是被刮傷而是崩缺，所以請握住母岩，別去碰那片綠。
