La cassitérite cristallise dans le système tétragonal et est très prisée pour son éclat adamantin (semblable à celui du diamant), sa densité élevée (6,8–7,1) et sa dureté de 6 à 7 sur l'échelle de Mohs. La montagne de Xuebaoding est réputée pour être l’un des principaux gisements mondiaux de cassitérite de qualité gemme, produisant des cristaux transparents à translucides d’une brillance exceptionnelle. Les gisements de fissures de type alpin de Xuebaoding ont livré certains des plus beaux spécimens de cassitérite jamais découverts, aux côtés de Scheelite et d’Aigue-marine de classe mondiale.
