Le plus haut cristal de cette plaque de Vera Cruz est limpide comme l'eau au pied et pleinement violet à la pointe, prisme élancé dressé presque à la verticale au-dessus de la matrice. Autour de lui, une couronne lâche de pointes plus courtes s'incline vers l'extérieur — certaines d'un violet profond, d'autres à peine teintées, l'une couchée à plat sur la druse comme un mât tombé. La roche hôte est d'un gris sombre, recouverte d'une croûte claire et sucrée.
L'améthyste du Veracruz vaut justement par cette sobriété : des prismes fins, vitreux, nettement terminés, la couleur rassemblée vers les pointes, tout autre chose que le violet saturé d'un bord à l'autre du matériel de géode brésilien. L'améthyste est un quartz, SiO2, teinté par le fer en traces qu'une radioactivité naturelle a activé au fil des temps géologiques. Cette couleur est sensible à la lumière : tenez la pièce à l'écart d'un rebord ensoleillé et elle conservera son violet indéfiniment.
La plaque fait 5,6 × 4,8 × 4,1 cm et pèse 111 g ; elle repose sur sa propre face plane et est proposée sans monture. Les images n'appartiennent qu'à cette pièce.
