關於此標本
知更鳥蛋藍的異極礦在此長成短短的珊瑚狀分枝，每一枝都朝著鈍圓、略偏綠的頂端漸粗，自一層覆蓋褐色鐵染岩板上表面的白色細針晶墊上升起。一臂之遙看去，藍色像是一片單一的色暈；湊近則分解為一根根分枝的柱體。
異極礦是一種含水鋅矽酸鹽，Zn4Si2O7(OH)2·H2O，形成於鋅礦體之上的氧化帽中，那裡循環的水會改造閃鋅礦。無色與白色是尋常的結果；像這樣的中國標本所帶的藍調，一般認為來自微量的銅。莫氏硬度 4.5 至 5，比看起來結實，不過纖細的針晶容易折斷，絕不可刷拭。
這件標本尺寸 4.6 × 4.1 × 2.5 cm，重 45 g，置於透明壓克力座上，並以一塊綠色黏土墊固定。照片中所見即為寄出的實物。
