關於此標本
一團雪白的石膏針簇坐落在薄片狀鐵褐色母岩的上緣附近：一朵半球形的玫瑰花結，由數百根髮絲般纖細、自同一根部向外放射的晶體組成。母岩同樣值得再看一眼——巧克力色與鏽褐色相間，中段鋪展著一層銀灰色的葡萄狀釉面，兩端各有一道刀刃般的尖角。
石膏的化學式為 CaSO4·2H2O，摩氏硬度僅 2，是多數收藏者櫃中最軟的東西。指甲即可劃傷，溫水就會開始溶解它，因此像這樣的花結絕不可沖洗；細針一旦互相黏結，就會失去那層讓它值得收藏的霜白質感。請以乾燥而極柔軟的毛刷或吹氣除塵，並讓指尖遠離白色部位。
母岩板長寬厚為 7.9 × 3.0 × 5.3 cm，重 75 g，如圖置於透明壓克力方座上，以一點白色黏土固定。收貨後即行拍攝，這就是本頁所售的標本。
