About this specimen
Morocco, conichalcite with quartz at 2.3 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. Arsenate mineral: wash hands after handling, and never grind or heat it.
Conichalcite is a calcium-copper arsenate that forms apple-green to grass-green botryoidal crusts and velvety coatings in oxidised copper deposits; the Bou Azzer district of Morocco is its classic source.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.
Morocco's Mibladen and Touissit districts are the classic source of vanadinite, cerussite and baryte, mined from lead deposits in the High Atlas.
